The Barbara Lazarus Award for Culture and Climate Call For Nominations

Sustaining the Spirit of Barbara Lazarus at Carnegie Mellon

Associate Provost for Academic Affairs, teacher, scholar and mentor to many of us, Barbara was a beloved member of the Carnegie Mellon community from 1984 to 2003. The award was first given to Barbara Lazarus posthumously on MLK Day in 2004.

A nationally and internationally known scholar and activist, Barbara worked tirelessly for the equity of women in the workplace, and the well-being and flourishing of graduate students and junior faculty at Carnegie Mellon. Barbara educated many of us on transforming the institutional environment, by her words and by her example. An innovator in education, Barbara also founded Carnegie Mellon’s outstanding Undergraduate Research Program.

“The Barbara Lazarus Award for Culture and Climate is to be bestowed on those who have had a transformational impact on culture and climate issues with an emphasis on graduate students and junior faculty. The award will focus on individual or group contributions to areas such as work/life balance, mentoring and considerations of issues surrounding diversity in one’s immediate area or university-wide. This award will recognize those who strive to actively support a campus tradition of diversity that values mutual respect for different ways of living, working and learning.”
