Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteering can be a great way to explore and confirm your interest in health professions, to strengthen your application package, and to have a positive impact on people's lives. With the many prestigious hospitals and medical centers here in Pittsburgh, there are plenty opportunities for you to get involved. Following is information on opportunites to volunteer in hospitals, as well as links that will help you locate a great variety of local and international organizations that need your help.

Shadyside Preceptorship Program

The hospital preceptorship is a competitive, ten-week volunteer experience in which ten Carnegie Mellon students interested in a medical career shadow residents at Shadyside Hospital. This experience is a period for scrutinizing carefully how physicians function in a hospital setting, how they interact with their patients and, perhaps most important of all, whether you actually want to be a member of a medical profession.

Participants are usually students with junior status. The program is offered during the fall and spring semesters, and involves a commitment of a minimum block of four hours of hospital time per week in a singe block. Participants will be expected to keep a journal, make a written appraisal and give an oral presentation about their preceptorship experience.
