Utilities and Services

Air Conditioning
Some of our residences are air-conditioned. If students need to install an air conditioner in a residence without air conditioning for medical reason, please read our Housing policy - air conditioning section.

Bicycle racks
Bicycle racks are provided in residential areas where appropriate. Please read our housing policy - bicycles section.

Cable TV
Residences located on campus include cable TV service in all student rooms. You will need to bring a cable-ready digital TV and a coaxial cable to connect.

Desk Services
Students living in a building served by Desk Services (Donner House, Hill Service Center, Morewood Gardens, Mudge House, Residence On Fifth, Stever House and West Wing) may approach the desk anytime for assistance. These are an excellent resource and point of contact for students.

Housekeeping
Housekeeping services are provided throughout university housing in all public areas. In traditional residence hall areas, the large community bathrooms with standard rooms are cleaned daily. Semi-private bathrooms are cleaned weekly. Residents of apartments, houses or rooms with private bathrooms are responsible for cleaning their own bathroom. A housing-supplied vacuum for residents to use is available from each Resident Assistant.

Internet
Wireless network access is available in on-campus residential buildings. We recommend using a wireless connection to reduce our overall energy consumption for the University. Ethernet (hard-wired) jacks are available in each on-campus room. Wired ports are turned off by default. If you need to use a wired connection, visit www.cmu.edu/computing network section for more details. The Residence on Fifth is a completely wireless environment.

Some of our Oakland community apartments use Comcast Broadband Internet services.

Key Services
Residents encountering difficulty with their locks, who need to report a lost or stolen key, or who are locked out can obtain Key Services assistance 24 hours a day. Occasional charges may apply.

Laundry
All residences have access to laundry facilities. Some machines require coins while others require a student ID card. A monitoring system permits checking online for available machines in some locations.

Linens (optional)
Carnegie Mellon Bookstore Linens
The Carnegie Mellon Bookstore offers a full line of linens designed to fit the extra long length of the mattresses in university housing buildings. Items are available for in-store pick-up when you arrive on campus in the fall. Sheet sets, towels, pillows and comforters are all available.

Residence Hall Linens Program
Sponsored by the Student Dormitory Council, residents can purchase sheets, comforters, towels and pillows from Residence Hall Linens - all guaranteed to fit on the university's extra long mattresses

Maintenance
Routine maintenance is performed on all buildings. Each building has a facility coordinator who is responsible for its condition. A maintenance request system permits students to report building deficiencies, damages and other problems from any computer. Students can also track their maintenance requests online. Damages by students may result in extra charges.

Microfridge Rentals(optional)
Offered by The Melvin Group, housing residents can rent microwave/refrigerator combination units that meet the university's specifications and are delivered and picked-up directly to and from your residence hall room.

Personal Property Insurance (optional)
The housing rates do not cover personal properties. You can consider getting your own personal property insurance. National Student Services Inc. has been providing renter's insurance to Carnegie Mellon students for years. You should contact NSSI directly with any questions about pricing or coverage. The university does not assume liability under any circumstances for a student's personal property.

Parking and Transportation Services
Parking and Transportation Services provides leased parking spaces around the campus and transportation resources to the university community.

Phone
Due to feedback from students regarding the extensive use of cell phones on campus, Housing and Dining Services has continued the removal of phone lines in individual student rooms. Common area phones will be available on each floor for emergency use and on-campus calling. Students are encouraged to use cell phones for local and long-distance calls. For specific information about phone line in a particular room, please contact the Housing and Dining Services office.

Postal Services
Postal services is available in the University Post Office which is located in the basement of the University Center.

Recycling and Refuse
All university-owned residences are set up to accommodate and encourage recycling. Recycling and garbage pickup are covered in the housing rates.

Emergency call boxes are located at various locations across campus, which provide a direct line to University Police. For residences with Desk Services, assistance may be obtained there. All department staff members are committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for its residents. Students are instrumental in this effort and are encouraged to become familiar with safety practices and safety-related policies.

Shuttle and Escort Services
The University Police provides free shuttle and escort services to students with a valid Student ID card.
