General Room Selection
General Room Selection is the final phase of Room Selection - it's the process where all remaining eligible residents who haven't yet selected a room choose from the remaining available spaces. Students who "Elect to Participate" by signing a Housing License Agreement receive a random Room Selection number within their class (first-year, sophomore, or junior), which determines the date and time when they select their housing assignment for the following academic year.
General Room Selection takes place in the West Wing Rec Room. Residents should plan to arrive about 10 minutes to their scheduled start time.
Dates to Remember:
March 25, 2012 @ 9 a.m. through March 29, 2012 @ 5 p.m. - Elect to Participate (sign Housing License Agreement and request Room Selection number)
April 2, 2012 and April 4, 2012 - General Room Selection
Eligibility for General Room Selection:
Any resident who is eligible for Room Selection and who hasn't already confirmed a housing assignment for the Fall 2012 semester is eligible to participate in General Room Selection as long as the Elect to Participate step was completed.
What to do to get ready for Room Selection:
- Talk to your friends and current roommates to decide who you would like to live with - make sure that they have not already selected a housing assignment for next year.
- Complete the "Elect to Participate" step on March 25, 26, 27, 28 or 29, to request to receive a random Room Selection Number. Please note that you will be required to complete your 2012-2013 electronic Housing License Agreement at this time. Be sure to read it carefully!
- Review the General Room Selection Schedule (available on March 30, 2012 by 5 p.m.) to determine your room selection date and time, based on your class standing and your random Room Selection Number. Note: You and your prospective roommates should all come together on the date/time of the person with the earliest (lowest) Room Selection number for your best chances of selecting a space together.
- Collect a proxy form for any roommate(s) that might not be able to attend with you.
- Arrive at the West Wing Recreation Room about 10 minutes before your designated date/time!
Things to keep in mind:
Current first-year residents in particular should be familiar with our Open Assignments policy, since it is likely that many first-year students will receive an Open Assignment during General Room Selection.
Not familiar with the upper-class living areas? Be sure to attend the Open Houses, investigate options on the Buildings page of the Housing website, and utilize the Guide to Selecting Your Room (coming soon) for help in choosing a living area.
Residents who are eligible to participate in General Room Selection but did not complete the Elect to Participate step, may be permitted to still participate in Room Selection with a Room Selection number at the end of their class. Please contact rmassign@andrew.cmu.edu for more information if you missed the Elect to Participate phase.
What Can I Expect?
Is this your first time participating in General Room Selection? Not sure what to expect? Here's what the process looks like.
- You will check in at the West Wing Rec Room about 10 minutes before your designated time. Be sure to bring your CMU ID card with you. If you're serving as a proxy for someone, you will need to check in for them as well, with their signed proxy form and a copy of their photo ID.
- Once you've checked in, you'll wait in the waiting area until your number is called. During this time, you can view the room availability information that is projected on the wall, or use your own laptop.
- Residents will then be lined up. In order to be as fair as possible, we line up all residents in exact order of their Room Selection number. Residents selecting with a roommate will be lined up with their roommate whose Room Selection number is during that time block. In the event that the roommates are not able to select a room together, the individual with the later Room Selection number will need to come back at their designated time.
- Residents will then be permitted into the TV Lounge area, where Housing and Dining staff members will assist them with identifying their space. Students selecting during the second half of the day on the last day of General Room Selection may receive an Open Assignment.
- Once you've identified a space, we will confirm it on your check-in card, which you will give to the person entering the assignments. You will leave with a confirmation sheet that shows what space you signed up for. This confirmation sheet also contains a lot of important information concerning dining plans, cancellation policies, etc. You should read this information and keep this sheet for your records in case there is a mistake with your assignment.
- Residents who would like to submit their 2012-2013 academic year Meal Plan contract will have the option of doing so at this time.
- Residents who are not completely satisfied with their selected room have the option of completing a room change waitlist application.
- You're done! Congratulations!
Room Availability
Room Availability previews will be available around March 30, 2012.
IMPORTANT: The information on the room availability tables changes constantly. Residents may use this as a resource, but spaces that are showing on these tables are not guaranteed and may not be available at selection time, even if they are still showing up on this list. Additionally, selection rules may dictate that a resident cannot select a particular room even if it is showing up as available.
