The University Lecture Series presents Robert Behrman, a Ph.D. student in Carnegie Mellon's Department of Engineering and Public Policy. In his talk, titled "Understanding Conditions in Iraq After the Surge," he'll present a description of the political, social, economic and security situation in Iraq from firsthand involvement and experience.

Carnegie Mellon University's Erica Fuchs will speak at 9 a.m., Oct. 14 at the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation breakfast forum in Washington, D.C., about the results of a new study examining the role of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) between 1992 and the present on innovation in the United States.

Carnegie Mellon University's Deborah A. Lange will receive a $900,000 check from Donald S. Welsh, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Region III — which includes Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and the District of Columbia — for continued research and education in the economic use of brownfields. Brownfields are abandoned, dormant and underused industrial or commercial properties.

At the 35th Carnegie Symposium on Cognition (Oct. 17-18), “Development and Brain Systems in Autism,” 16 of the world’s most prominent autism researchers will present their latest groundbreaking findings on the disorder and discuss the direction of future study that will continue to improve scientists’ understanding of autism.
