The Inaugural Year Continues – Celebrate “Healthy Campus”

The entire campus community is invited to participate in this interactive health and wellness event.

• Come to an inaugural-year symposium that will focus on current research about personal, campus
   and community health and wellness.
• Receive a free gift when you share what you do to stay healthy (while supplies last).

Learn what the day’s events are all about and view a showcase of university community members who define what wellness means to them.  Add your own definition of health and wellness in this participatory space and receive a gift.

Discover your inner chef as CulinArt and the Underground teach you how to create new, healthy, and tasty dishes.  Interactive cooking demonstrations for the campus community are available at Wean Commons and Hoch Commons, and a special faculty/staff and graduate student demonstration will be featured in Schatz.

Tour the Mindfulness Room
Tour this peaceful space in West Wing designed to promote healthy relaxation for all community members.
Tours will leave from the doors of the Connan Room at 11:15 and 11:45 a.m.

Chair Massages
Massage is offered as a complement to standard medical care and as a wellness service.  It can reduce stress, pain, and muscle tension.  Today, 10-minute chair massages will be available on a first come, first served basis by massage therapists who provide care at University Health Services.

Craft and Game Space
Play stimulates the brain and body while reducing stress and connecting us with others.  Let your imagination run wild as you create a piece of art or grab a few friends and play a game.  
McKenna Room

Knit/Crochet Circle
The rhythmic motion of knitting aids in your body’s ability to reduce stress hormones.  Knitting circles offer social interaction, as well.  Come meet Knit & Crochet Club members who will be working on individual projects and offering instruction for beginners.  Bring your own needles and yarn if you can!

Ergonomics Demonstration
Ergonomics is the science of fitting the job to the worker.  In this ergonomically-constructed office space, learn about best work station layouts, body positions, desk stretches, and work habits for reducing strain on muscles, joints, and eyes from Environmental Health & Safety representatives.

Research into Practice: Health and Wellness for Ourselves and for Our Community

Carnegie Mellon is a data-driven community, so it is natural that when we come together to think about health and wellness for our campus, we look at what the research says.  This discussion will engage public health professionals and CMU faculty whose research—from different disciplines and perspectives—reveals fascinating insights about how we make decisions about our health and our community.

Dance can be a transforming activity that has numerous physical, mental, spiritual, and social benefits.  Join the Ballroom Dance Club for some basic lessons on popular forms of dance.  Each session is 45 minutes.  Comfortable shoes and clothing are recommended!

Two screenings of the Best Picture Oscar-nominated film featuring Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto.  Tickets are $1 with a CMU ID, $3 without, and will be available outside of McConomy Auditorium beginning 30 minutes prior to each show time.  Note: This movie is rated R and not intended for young audiences.
