Enroll Now: Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP)

There are two important changes to the Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP) for the 2014-2015 school year.

First Change

After a review of the submitted proposals by Health Services administration and student consumers, the SHIP carrier has changed from Highmark to Aetna.  They have a strong presence in the student health insurance market, insuring over 200 schools including many of our peer institutions. Students will continue to have access to UPMC and the Allegheny Health Network.

Aetna will provide medical, dental and vision insurance programs.  The cost of the Standard medical Plan is $1,191.00 and the cost of the Enhanced medical Plan is $2,496.00.

The Standard Plan offered by the university is comparable to a Gold Metal tier plan in the Health Insurance Marketplace (HealthCare.gov) and the Enhanced Plan meets the criteria for Platinum.

Second Change

Students on their parent’s health insurance plans, as well as other plans purchased on a state or federal insurance marketplace, are eligible to apply for a waiver*. These plans must meet the university’s waiver requirements for coverage, access the full policy statement.

Enroll or apply for a waiver for the 2014-15 plan year July 1st – September 5th

Students may visit the Student Insurance webpage for premium and benefit information, to access FAQs and for online enrollment instructions. If you have questions concerning coverage, please contact our Student Insurance Office by phone (412-268-2157, select option #3 for insurance) or e-mail.

*In accordance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), students who are under 26 years of age are eligible to remain on their parent’s insurance plan. While the student insurance plan negotiated by the university meets all of the ACA criteria for individual coverage at a very competitive rate, the change in Mandatory Student Health Insurance Policy allows students to shop for the best plan and access federal tax subsidy if they qualify.
