Green Roof Water Monitoring Plan

Hamerschlag Hall's new state of
the art extensive green roof system is possible with funds received
from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Energy
Harvest Program and the 3 Rivers Wet Weather Demonstration Program.
A waterproof and root resistant membrane will form the base layer
and on top will go drainage material, soil and plants. The new roof
will provide many benefits for the building and the local environment.
Replacing a gravel surface with green space will combat the urban heat
island effect, the ability of the soil to hold rainwater will slow the
runoff and help to prevent sewage overflows, the extra insulation of
plants and soil should help to reduce heating and cooling costs, and
this is just the beginning. Monitoring equipment has been installed on the green
roof and on a control roof on Porter Hall to
monitor the benefits. With positive results we may be seeing more
green roofs across the campus in the future.
