Green Practices Committee Key Recommendations

  • Dining Services:
Through product substitutions and exploitation of composting alternatives, reduce the solid waste volume.  Take advantage of opportunities for environmental education in the dining halls.
  • Recycling:
Expand the recycling program to include kitchens, resident halls, and other un-served areas.
  • Procurement:
Develop environmental criteria and guidelines for campus purchasers and vendors.
  • Communication:
Initiate a vigorous, multi-pronged effort at communication of campus environmental activities.  Develop a physical “Environmental Center” on campus.
  • Environmental Awards:
Initiate a new campus award focused on sustainable practices.
  • Energy Management:
Develop a long-term energy management and implementation plan.  Exploit federal and state funding for energy management innovations.
  • Building Renovation and Construction:
Commit to use of green technologies and materials in the renovation of classrooms, so that these functional spaces enhance environmental awareness on campus.  Make available competitive seed funding for research projects focused on campus green building practices.  Follow LEED guidelines in construction projects on campus.
  • Landscaping:
Initiate an environmentally sensitive, low maintenance campus greening effort.  Include environmentally progressive landscaping designs in the campus master planning project.
  • Transportation:
Partner with the University of Pittsburgh in their anole.  Establish more flexible parking permits that will encourage increased bus use. Initiate a Transportation Management office to replace the Parking Office.
  • Environmental Coordinator:
Establish a full-time Environmental Coordinator position in Facilities Management, with responsibility for campus resource conservation and recovery programs (recycling, solid waste disposal, water conservation), and for encouraging and assisting students, staff, and faculty in identifying and implementing conservation opportunities on campus.
