Student or class environmental projects
Waste Reduction
Work to develop new approaches for waste reduction on campus.
Departmental Green Teams 'Build a Movement'
Develop a green team 'tool kit' for departmental 'green teams' comprised of faculty, staff & students. The goal will be to help departments reduce their environmental footprint & share successes with others across campus.
Feasibility Studies
1. A wind tubine demonstration project on campus. Where is the best location on campus to site a wind turbine? Perhaps a building along the river? (PTC). A wind study and cost benefit analysis needs to be conducted. What type of wind turbine would work best in our area on the chosen site? Would there be any issues with the surrounding community for this project or City/County regulations to consider?
2. A solar thermal system for the University Center. Low grade heat is needed for hot showers and the pool in the UC. Using the same type of technology used for the Solar House on campus, would a solar hot water system be cost effective to install for the University Center?
3. Solar panels on the East Campus Parking garage. The top of the East Campus Parking garage is a perfect location to install solar panels across the entire upper level. It would make a 'roof' for cars below and generate power. Given the available area, how much energy would be produced and how much would this project cost? Would there be any issues with the surrounding community for this project or City/County regulations to consider?
4. How LEED EB can be addessed in campus buildings. Research how can we can effectively use LEED EB for some of our existing campus buidlings.
