Campus Environmental Awards
Carnegie Mellon wants to recognize those individuals and groups on campus who are making an effort to conduct research, participate in campus activities, and live their lives in a way that helps and/or minimizes damage to the environment. Below you will find several awards that reflect Carnegie Mellon's commitment to helping the environment.

Green Teams Sustainable Practices Award
The Green Teams Sustainable Practices Award is designed to encourage the development of sound environmental practices at the individual or departmental level that could serve as a model for the rest of campus and/or other institutions of higher education. The award recognizes those individuals and departments which take steps to conserve resources and minimize waste while incurring financial savings. All groups, departments, and members of the campus are eligible for consideration. Individuals are permitted to nominate themselves.
Carnegie Mellon Undergraduate Environmental Research Award
All Undergraduate Research Symposium participants undertaking projects with a strong environmental component are eligible to enter the competition for the Undergraduate Environmental Research Award. To compete for this award you must check the appropriate box on the registration form. You may apply for this award in addition to applying for other awards such as the CIT Honors Poster Competition, Sigma Xi Poster competition etc.
A panel of judges will rate your poster or presentation using the following criteria:
- Significance of project with respect to improving or protecting the environment (25% of points).
- Abstract quality (15%)
- Clarity of Objective (15%)
- General quality of Work (15%)
- Quality of Poster or Presentation (15%)
- Response to Questions (15%)
The award winner will receive a cash prize of $200. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony following the Undergraduate Research Symposium. To compete in the competition, you must register for the Undergraduate Research Symposium and check off the box for the Undergraduate Environmental Research Award.
Excellence in Environmental Building Practices - Carnival Booth Building
Award - Potential to score 20 additional points in the judging competition
Judging form will have criteria for judges to determine the environmental impact of Carnival booths. The criteria for the 20 points will include:
- Reuse of material
- Minimizing impact on the landfill
- Structural Design - ease of tear down and salvageability
- Effective design with minimal material use
- Use of environmental materials
- Avoidance of toxic materials
- Creative use of found materials
- Use of efficient lighting
- Overall environmental stewardship
Community Environmental Awards
Carnegie Mellon received several environmental awards in 2001 for its purchase of wind energy. This was our 'watershed year' for green power leadership. Carnegie Mellon purchased 5% of its total electricity from wind turbines from the Exelon-Community Energy Wind Farm in Fayette County, about 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

First Annual Green Power Leadership Awards
The Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Center for Resource Solutions presented eleven companies and organizations with the First Annual Green Power Leadership Awards. Carnegie Mellon received the plaque on July 31, 2001 in Portland Oregon.
EPA Green Power Partnership Founding Partner
Carnegie Mellon received the obelisk on July 31, 2001 in Portland Oregon.
Clean Cities Award
In recognition as a leader toward the improvement of air quality, strengthening the local economy, and enhancing public awareness of alternative fuels through its commitment to the Clean Cities Program and the Pittsburgh Region. Carnegie Mellon received the plaque on October 11, 2001 in Pittsburgh. We received the award for our purchase of three alternative fueled vehicles in 2001.
PA Governor's Office Proclamation Wind Energy Week
October 21-27, 2001
Carnegie Mellon is named in the proclamation; Whereas, Carnegie Mellon has committed to purchase 5% of its total electricity from wind turbines being brought on-line in Fayette County, the largest single purchase of wind energy in the U.S.
New Wind Energy Leader Award
Carnegie Mellon received a plaque and a stainless steel miniature replica of a wind turbine at the dedication event for the Exelon and Community Energy Wind Farms in Somerset and Mill Run. The awards for the university were received on October 24, 2001 in Somerset, PA.
Penn Future's Community Institution of the Year Award
Penn Future's Green Power 'Turn it On' Salutes the Carnegie Mellon University on their outstanding commitment to renewable energy and a cleaner and brighter future. Carnegie Mellon received the plaque in November 2001 at the event held in Pittsburgh
Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence
Carnegie Mellon received the award in the category Energy Efficiency, for our decision to purchase wind power. Carnegie Mellon received the Keystone award at a December 19, 2001 event held in Harrisburg, PA
