Alternative Vehicles
Carnegie Mellon recently introduced new Global Electric Motorcars (GEM). A GEM NEV is a zero-emission electric vehicle that operates on 110v household current that has been designed to replace an internal combustion engine car for short trips.

Alternative Fuels
In July 2007 the University shuttle buses started operating on bio-diesel fuel which can be purchased at Giant Eagle's Get-Go on Baum Blvd. Also, our new police cars will utilize E-85 ethanol and we are participating in the Zip Car Program.
Facilities Management Services uses electric vehicles for transportation around the grounds.


Bus Passes and Carpooling
Bus passes are provided to all Carnegie Mellon students, faculty and staff. Your Carnegie Mellon ID acts as your bus pass and can be used to ride any Port Authority buses to and from Carnegie Mellon as well as any personal travel.
Carnegie Mellon also has a carpool incentive program for commuters offering special parking privileges.
Ride a Bike
Riding a bike to work or school instead of driving or taking a bus is an inexpensive and fun way to help reduce harmful emissions and even get in shape! Below is a list of organizations that are helpful resources for those that want to commute via bikes!

Free Ride
Free Ride is a place that has the space, equipment and tools so that you can work on your bike in return for volunteer hours. Free ride is located in Construction Junction. Visit the Construction Junction website for more info!
Bike Locker Rentals
Parking services has individual bicycle lockers for use by those who have a bicycle on campus, or for those who would like to commute to campus by bicycle.
The lockers are made of steel and totally enclose the bicycle. There is enough room for a helmet, riding shoes etc.
Eight lockers are available near Newell Simon Hall to anyone that holds a current bicycle registration (sticker on the bike). If your bicycle is not registered you may do so for free with the Campus Police Department.
Locker Payment: A $45.00/year plus a $5 key deposit, which will be refunded when you finish using your locker at the end of the rental period upon returning the key. The locker can be renewed for next year.

Commuter Information
The CommuteInfo program is designed to serve as an information clearing house for commuters and employers. The alternatives include transit, carpooling, vanpooling and bikepooling.
CommuteInfo is a program of Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, operated in partnership with transportation management associations, transportation providers, businesses and non-profit service organizations throughout Southwestern, PA.
The program serves employers and commuters in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington and Westermoreland counties.
