Graduate Student SERVICE Award
Nominations due: Friday, February 10, 2012
Purpose
Carnegie Mellon University's Graduate Student Service Award is given annually to encourage and recognize a graduate student who has advanced the interests of Carnegie Mellon graduate students, improved the quality of life for graduate students on campus and/or contributed to the larger academic community.
Examples of service commitment include but are not limited to:- evidence of leadership on university, department or graduate student committees
- leadership in student organizations or activities (note that current GSA Executive Committee; members are ineligible for nomination)
- support of current student interests on campus or in the community
- development and/or- activity with outreach service programs
- service with local or national organizations representing Carnegie Mellon graduate students
- service with local or national organizations advancing graduate student interests
The award will be given during the annual Innovation with Impact: Graduate Student Research, Teaching, and Service Celebration during Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation week. This coming year the Celebration event will be held on Thursday, April 5, 2012. The award recipient will receive an engraved tray and a monetary honorarium. Honorable mentions will receive letters of commendation.
Eligibility
All Carnegie Mellon graduate students who have demonstrated outstanding service in their department, college or the broader academic community are eligible for nomination. Students who have been nominated in the past or received honorable mentions are welcome to be nominated again. Previous winners are ineligible for nomination.

Nomination Requirements
Nominations may be submitted by any member of the Carnegie Mellon community, undergraduate and graduate students, staff, faculty and alumni, and should describe the qualities and activities that make the nominee an excellent candidate for the award. The Committee Chair must receive nomination packages by Friday, February 10, 2012. Send nominations to Suzie Laurich-McIntyre, Assistant Vice Provost for Graduate Education, 533 Warner Hall, or email materials to grad-ed@cmu.edu.
Each nominator is expected to compile the following packet of materials for submission:
- A nomination letter addressed to the Graduate Student Service Award Committee summarizing the individual’s accomplishments.
- Additional letters of recommendation from faculty, staff, current and former students, or other colleagues who have substantive knowledge of the nominee’s service activities. Up to five letters will be accepted, in either hard copy or e-mail. Note that a supporting letter compiling comments from various sources (such as 5-10 faculty or students in a department) will also be accepted.
- Additional supporting materials to represent the quality of the nominee’s service accomplishments and information about the direct service. This might include executive summaries, program/service information of activities initiated by the nominee, promotional materials, brochures, and/or other materials. Nominators may request information from the graduate student nominee, but are not required to do so.
Selection
The Committee will choose one person to be recommended to the Provost as the recipient of the Graduate Student Service Award. The winner will be announced campus-wide the beginning of April. The award will be presented at the Innovation with Impact: Celebration of Graduate Student Teaching, Service and Research on Thursday, April 5, 2012 during Graduate Student Appreciation Week.
