Carnegie Mellon has worked with other universities, foundations, companies, and governments to help in the establishment of a new university. In most cases, the challenge is to create a new kind of university rather than replicating an existing model. We have engaged in several of these activities and are considering others. In all these cases, we have been the designer, not the owner. Also, our role is varied from creating the general design of the university, to being involved in processes such as recruiting faculty, designing curriculum and courses, as well as helping an implementation. The invitation to engage in these design activities comes from universities or governments.
