Alternative Break Programs

Alternative Break programs work with national and international communities by training and immersing students in a purposeful service-learning experience designed to connect students and community members while enhancing personal growth, cultural enrichment, heightening social awareness and promoting social change and life long learning. Alternative Break experiences are conducted during Mid-semester Break, Winter Break and Spring Break. The trips provide opportunities for participants to live, share and volunteer with other students while working toward positive change and establishing lasting relationships with the communities they serve. The Alternative Break experiences are currently led by two service organizations, Alternative Break and Habitat for Humanity. Both student organizations are advised by the Coordinator for Community Service in the Division of Student Affairs.

Carnegie Mellon Arts Alliance

The Carnegie Mellon Arts Alliance began in the fall of 2004, and offers an opportunity for Carnegie Mellon musicians to share their talents with the Pittsburgh community. Throughout the year, the CMAA sets up music students with outreach performances for ensembles as well as solo instruments. These are very special events for people who don't normally get the opportunity to listen to live music, and it is a chance for students to program a creative, fun concert.

There are several locations and atmospheres that the program serves, from an evening performance for the Weinberg Terrace in Squirrel Hill, to an atrium garden with music wafting up four floors to patients and their families at the Hillman Cancer Center, or directly for patients in their rooms on one of the floors at UPMC Shadyside. All of the locations are close to campus, and very accessible to students with and without cars. For more information, go to: http://www.cmu.edu/career/cfa/outreach
