FSO Supported Scholarships

FSO supported scholarships are competitive external scholarships (not provided by Carnegie Mellon) that our office promotes and assists students applying to them.  In many cases, an institutional endorsement or nomination is required, which is coordinated by FSO.

The awards below are listed alphabetically.  Select an option below to narrow your search.



Beinecke Memorial Scholarship Program
Carnegie Mellon may nominate one junior who is planning to attend graduate school in humanities, social sciences or Arts. Winners receive $2,000 upon entering graduate school and up to $30,000 while attending.

Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Junior Fellowship Program
For graduating seniors and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year who have not yet begun graduate studies. Non-U.S. citizens attending universities in the United States are eligible. Positions are paid, full-time positions for one year beginning August 1. Fellows receive $2,750/month and a full benefits package.

Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarships
For graduate work in engineering, mathematics and science at Churchill College, Cambridge University. Must be a U.S. citizen. Award covers all Cambridge University fees & tuition, plus a living allowance and travel expenses, with a total value between $48,000 and $50,000.

Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Fellowship Program
Carnegie Mellon may nominate 2 students. Must be a senior or have graduated in the last five years. Non-U.S. citizens ARE eligible. Any discipline. May use this scholarship at an approved institution abroad or in the U.S. Winners receive a maximum of $50,000/year for a maximum of 6 years of study.

Fulbright US Student Program
Study, research or teach English in over 150 countries for seniors, graduate students and alumni (US citizenship required).  The Fulbright program promotes mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchange.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarships
Scholarships for graduate study for American students at the University of Cambridge. Award covers full cost of study at Cambridge plus airfare to and from the U.K.

Glamour's Top 10 College Women Competition
For female college juniors in all fields of study who exhibit academic excellence, leadership experience, and involvement in campus and community affairs. Non-U.S. citizens are eligible. Winners receive $3,000, recognition in a Glamour issue, and a trip to New York City.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
Sophomores and juniors who plan to be scientists, mathematicians, or engineers. Winners receive up to $7,500 annually to help cover tuition, fees, books, room & board.
Campus Deadline: December 1, 2008 (submit application & recommendations online, deliver hardcopy materials (essay & transcripts) to FSO-530F Warner Hall)

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Up to $5,000 to students in any field who have already been accepted to a study abroad program.  $3000 Critical Need Language Supplements are available for students studying a critical need language for a total possible award of $8000.  A list of eligible languages can be found on the Gilman website.  Students must receive a Federal Pell Grant to be eligible. U.S. citizenship required.

Humanity in Action
For sophomores, juniors, seniors, and recent graduates (May 2006 or later) in all fields of study interested in study in Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, or the United States. Non-U.S. citizens are eligible. HIA will cover travel and accommodations expenses related to the HIA educational program.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program
Seniors, alumni, or first year graduate students in selected fields of study of the arts, humanities and social sciences. U.S citizens or nationals, permanent residents, or citizens of any of the freely Associated States. Winners receive tuition and stipend with a total value of up to $30,000 to work towards a PhD or Master's degree (if Master's is highest degree offered in the field).

Luce Scholars Program

Rare opportunity to live and work in Asia for a year. Designed to increase awareness of Asia among America's future leaders, the Luce Scholars Program offers a cultural experience (as opposed to professional training,or education, per se) through internships based on applicants' interests,background, and qualifications. Examples include placements at the ateliers of several leading Japanese architects; English-language newspapers in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Bangkok; a family planning center in Taiwan; and more.

Marshall Scholarships
Seniors and graduates who are U.S. citizens to study in the U.K. Award covers university fees, tuition, books, a thesis grant, research & daily travel, plus fares to & from the U.S.

The George J. Mitchell Scholarships
Seniors, alumni, and graduate students no older than 30 to study in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Award covers tuition, housing, a $12,000 living expenses stipend, and international travel.
No campus deadline, but the Mitchell Scholarship Committee expects applicants to work with the university advisors for support and advice in preparing the application.

National Security Education Program David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships
Undergraduates who are U.S. citizens and are interested in study abroad in areas other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Winners receive a maximum of $20,000/academic year.

Public Policy & International Affairs Fellowship Program

Rhodes Scholarship Program
Seniors and graduate students who are U.S. citizens to study at Oxford. Award covers all educational costs, tuition, fees, and travel.

Rotary
3-month, 6-month, 1-year, & 2-year scholarships abroad to promote international understanding.Undergraduate and graduate students (must have completed at least two years of university coursework or equivalent professional experience prior to beginning scholarship studies).

Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Defense Education Program
The SMART Defense Education Program is a scholarship/fellowship for service program in which academically excellent students pursuing degrees in disciplines of particular interest to the Department of Defense receive funding for full tuition, related educational fees, and living expenses and are then placed in civilian laboratory positions upon graduation.

The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans
For graduate study in the United States. Any field. Seniors and students already pursuing graduate study (if not past second year) are eligible (a "new American" has applied for naturalization, has been naturalized as a U.S. citizen, or is the child of two parents who are both naturalized citizens). Award covers 1/2 university tuition plus a $20,000/year grant.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation
Must be a junior interested in a career in the public sector. Funding is for graduate or professional schools in the United States or foreign countries. Winners receive up to $30,000 for 2-3 years of graduate study.

Morris K. Udall Scholarship
Sophomores and juniors are eligible (including those in the 4th year of a 5th year track) from a variety of fields who have demonstrated a commitment to environmental or natural resource issues through a combination of coursework, research, internships, jobs, or extracurricular activities.  Native American or Alaskan native students are also eligible for fields related to tribal health care or tribal policy. Winners receive up to $5,000 for tuition, room and board, or other educational expenses.
