Selected Shorts from The Braddock Chronicles
Directed by Tony Buba
“I focus on my hometown because I am continually challenged to create new ways of seeing it…I want to convey the humor and the quirkiness of people in one community, my community, using cinematic forms that fit the tone, rhythm and texture of their stories.” Since 1974, Tony Buba has remained true to his word, showing the faces of the Braddock reality as it has changed from its boomtown days to the waning memories of its remaining key players. Faces of Realism has selected from Tony’s early works, The Braddock Chronicles, a collection of black and white, short documentaries depicting, as examples, failed and striving entrepreneurs, a wiry, sweet-talking gangster wannabe, a family’s glimpse into the old world and the mill workers who forged so much of the area’s identity. Buba’s films have received numerous awards and appeared in film festivals such as Ann Arbor, Sundance, Berlin and Toronto. Faces of Realism, the 2009 Carnegie Mellon International Film Festival proudly pairs one of Tony’s shorts with each screening, with the exception of the short film 92.3 FM by Florian Michaelsen, a German exchange student at Robert Morris University, who worked under Buba’s direction as a film educator. Additionally, Faces eagerly hosts Buba as the Master of Ceremonies for the Opening Night Screening of Il Divo (Italy, 2008).
