Art Course Descriptions

Core Studios

Animation
Learn the tools and techniques necessary to create 2D and 3D animation. Work with modeling, texturing, rigging and animation in the Maya software package with an emphasis on using animation to realize both character-based narratives and to explore non-narrative possibilities.

Comic Book/Serial Imagery
From Superman to Watchman to the Museum of Modern Art, comic books and serial imagery have entertained our lives influencing everything from movies to fashion to fine art. Investigate contemporary comic book productions techniques, including story boarding, character development and drawing styles.

Drawing Studio
Create and develop two-dimensional images through a variety of materials and techniques including charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, and non-traditional media. Work with subject matter that addresses the human figure, still life, portraiture, nature and architecture. After focusing in core drawing studios, students will develop their portfolios on Fridays. They will focus on their best work, both completed and in progress. Appropriate assignments to strengthen individual portfolios will be given and sketchbooks will be developed. Critiques are offered.

Painting Studio
Work with the traditional tools, materials and techniques of painting to develop concepts and skills. Become involved in the creation and organization of shape, form, color and texture while experimenting with paint application and surface development.

Sculpture Studio
Explore three-dimensional concepts, skills and processes of sculpture. Using the machinery of the metal or woodshop, expand your technical vocabulary with tools such as MIG welders, oxy-acetylene torches, grinders, chop saws, miter and table saws as well as sewing machines. Work with materials such as metal, wood, plaster, plastic or fabric to explore contemporary issues in sculpture.

 

Mini Courses

Ceramics
Discover the possibilities of ceramic media in contemporary sculpture. Work with clay as a sculptural material while focusing on basic construction and finishing techniques. Learn hand building, fabrication, surface design, glazing and kiln firing

Digital Photography
Use the most up-to-date digital imaging techniques, while learning fundamentals of photographic art. Learn about camera controls and techniques with respect to aesthetics and vision. Use sophisticated computer software to manipulate imagery and digital printing to express and communicate ideas. You are required to bring your own digital cameras and manuals.

Head Studies
Study the proportions, structures and places of the human head and its treatment in varying styles, materials and techniques. Develop skills using materials such as paint, charcoal, crayon and pastel.

Printmaking Studio
Investigate a wide range of printmaking techniques that may include: silk-screen, collograph, monotype, dry point etching and intaglio. Produce a portfolio of prints through exploring a variety of processes. Focus on the development of subject matter as well as technique.

 

Open to All Students

Faculty Lecture Series (Required)
Discover more about your instructors' creative professional lives as they present their work in evening sessions each week. Participate in a relaxed but lively dialogue over pizza and soda as they share their ideas and motivations.

Extra Open Figure Drawing Session (Three are required)
Focus on the figure one evening each week. Gain further experience in the structure of the human form while refining drawing skills and sampling materials of your choice. Develop and expand your sketchbooks and portfolios more independently in sessions supervised by
monitors.
