What is required for admission?
We ask that students send us the application, application fee, essay, official high school transcript, recommendation letters from counselor or teachers, and resume (drama), tape/cd (music).
What kind of grades does my child need to get into the program?
We look at a variety of factors when making an admission decision including grades, level of interest, recommendation letters and previous experience. Students who are strong A/B students are encouraged to apply.
How competitive is the admission process?
Our admission numbers heavily depend on the number of applications we receive, which fluctuates each year. Please know that we do our best to give this opportunity to as many qualified students as possible.
How many students are in each program?
| 2012 | Applied | Enrolled |
|---|---|---|
| APEA | 287 | 135 |
| Architecture | 87 | 24 |
| Art | 139 | 64 |
| Drama | 241 | 116 |
| Game Academy | 189 | 89 |
| Music | 103 | 51 |
| Total | 1046 | 479 |
When is the latest I can apply to get in?
We will accept applications until May 1, however, pending space available in the program we will continue to accept applications through June 1. The international application deadline is April 1. Admission occurs on a rolling basis, so it’s better to apply earlier rather than later. Finally, a student who enrolls earlier has more opportunities to get into the classes he/she requested.
Where should my recommendation letters come from?
Your recommendation letters should come from teachers, coaches or counselors that know you well and can add a personal dimension to your application.
How many recommendations does each student need to submit?
Send one from your guidance counselor or two teachers who are familiar with your work habits, as well as your academic and artistic progress or your response to teaching/directing and spirit of cooperation in group situations.
Is there an audition requirement for any of the programs?
There is no audition for the Pre-College programs except for Pre-College Music. Pre-College Music students should send a recent audio recording with their application. Fine Arts students should include an art resume with their application. Once students arrive on campus, there are placement auditions on the first day for Drama and Music. Detailed instructions are available in the application.
Will this help my child get into Carnegie Mellon’s undergraduate programs?
While attending a Pre-College program does not directly factor into the undergraduate admission process, a student who has experience in the Carnegie Mellon environment and has done well with the course load is looked at positively.
