What is a Carnegie Mellon Card?

One of the most important items that you will need at Carnegie Mellon is your official photo Carnegie Mellon Card.  It is your official student ID card.  It is your access to buildings, local bus transportation, the library and athletic facilities.  This photo ID identifies you as a member of the Carnegie Mellon community.

How can I get my Carnegie Mellon Card?

Simply complete the Carnegie Mellon Card Information Form and submit your photograph by June 1 and your card will be waiting for you when you arrive on campus. Cards will also be issued on Opening Day.

I lost my Carnegie Mellon Card, how do I get a replacement?

Report your lost card to the Carnegie Mellon Card Office immediately, you can email thehub@andrew.cmu.edu. Come to the Card Office to pick up your replacement. A $25.00 fee is charged for all replacement cards.

What is Plaid Ca$h?

Plaid Ca$h is a prepaid, stored-value/debit account that is accessible via your Carnegie Mellon Card –it is the convenient, cashless way to pay on and off campus. You'll use Plaid Ca$h for textbooks, school supplies and laundry tokens.  You can use it to pay for restaurants, delivery and more: for a complete list of on and off-campus vendors that accept PlaidCa$h, visit the Card Office's Web site.

How do I open a Plaid Ca$h account?

Complete the form that was included in your Pre-College Packet, enclose a check in the amount of the deposit and submit it to us before June 1. If you are making a Plaid Ca$h deposit via check, this form must be received by the Card Office by June 1. This will ensure that the funds will be in your account upon your arrival on campus.

How does Plaid Ca$h work?

We simply deposit the money into your Carnegie Mellon Card student account in the Plaid Ca$h system under your Student ID number. Your number is encoded on the magnetic strip on the back of your Carnegie Mellon Card.

How do I use Plaid Ca$h?

To use your Plaid Ca$h account, present your ID Card, rather than cash, to the cashier at any location that Plaid Ca$h is accepted. The amount of money you have left in your account is shown after every transaction, so you will always know your balance. There’s plenty of notice if the account runs low, and it is easy to make another deposit. If you would like an itemized statement, you may request one and it will be available in the Card Office within 3-4 business days.

How can my parents make additional deposits to my Plaid Ca$h account?

Deposits after June 1, can be made at the Card Office's Web site. You may also come to the Card Office and open an account paying via cash, check, VISA or MasterCard. Parents will need to know their student’s Andrew ID number and their ID card number in order to identify the student.

No, you may not withdraw money from your PlaidCa$h account.

Can I have the money left in my Plaid Ca$h account refunded at the conclusion of the Pre-College Program?

No, Pre-College Plaid Ca$h is a NON-REFUNDABLE PROGRAM after July 1; you may, however, continue to make purchases until your account is depleted.
