Madelyn Miller started her career working in research laboratories before running the freshman/sophomore teaching laboratories at the College of William and Mary for 10 years. Switching careers, she has worked as a chemical safety specialist since 1990. During this time she has been in charge of the chemical safety programs at William & Mary for 5 years and 4 years at Carnegie Mellon. In 1999, Madelyn was promoted to Director of the Environmental Health & Safety office here at Carnegie Mellon.
Madelyn has a BS in Biology from the Virginian Commonwealth University in 1976 and a MPM from Carnegie Mellon University in 2002.

Mark is a graduate of Penn State University , with a degree in Earth Science. He is also a Certified Industrial Hygienist, a Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer and a Certified Hazardous Waste Materials Manager.
Before joining Carnegie Mellon in 1999, Mark spent more than 20 years with the commercial testing laboratories and consultant firms, focusing on industrial hygiene testing and consulting, laboratory safety and environmental compliance issues.

Jim is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He has also taken graduate courses at Rutgers University. Jim is a Certified Safety Manager, a Certified Ergonomic Compliance Manager, and an OSHA-authorized trainer in both Construction Safety and General Industry Safety.
Before joining Carnegie Mellon in 1992, Jim worked more than 20 years in heavy industry, where the safety programs he developed won a number of awards.

Bob joined Carnegie Mellon (then Carnegie Tech) as a police officer in 1965. In Campus Police he also served as a radio dispatcher and shift commander. In 1976 he became the Coordinator of Safety and Security, assuming responsibility for campus fire safety. He initiated an evacuation drill program for student residences, and began developing evacuation plans for academic and administrative buildings. He also provided guidance for provision, maintenance, and testing of fire protection and suppression systems on campus. He transferred into Facilities Management in 1980, where he continued to oversee university fire protection and managing Environmental Protection Agency regulations for hazardous waste and asbestos management.
As a member of the Environmental Health & Safety Department in 1984, Bob initiated programs for student’s safety such as the Structural Building Guidelines for student construction projects such as Spring Carnival, and training, inspection of buggy prep vehicles during Sweepstakes races.
Bob continues to assist with fire safety on campus by providing training sessions and working closely with Pittsburgh Fire and Building Inspection to review fire protection systems and installations.

Andrew Lawson attended West Virginia University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology in 2001 and a Master of Science Degree in Industrial Hygiene in 2008. Andrew is also a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
Prior to joining our Department in 2004, Andrew was a Graduate Assistant at West Virginia University's Department of Environmental Health and Safety, where he gained experience in asbestos and chemical hygiene.

Michael has received a M.S. degree in Industrial Hygiene from West Virginia University. He is a member of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and a national and local member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA).

Rick Caruso worked for the City of Pittsburgh, Bureau of Fire, for 28 years before joining Carnegie Mellon. He served as Captain in the Fire Prevention Division.
He specialized in Hazardous Materials and Code Enforcement. Rick is certified by the International Code Council as a Fire Inspector and holds a certification as a Building Officials and Code Administrator. He also was the owner of Caruso Consulting Services where he provided consulting service for fire and life safety code issues and underground storage tanks installation and removal. Rick's company was authorized by the City of Pittsburgh and State of Pa. (Labor & Industry Department) to approve fire protection system for them.

Maureen stated at Environmental Health & Safety in 2007. Prior to working at Carnegie Mellon, Maureen worked at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf where she was the department secretary for the high school. Maureen helps with editing and proofreading correspondence, procedures and protocols for the university and assists with data entry.

Ahren is the Systems Analyst for the EH&S department. His accomplishments include the development of ALERT - a tool used for laboratory audits and emergency response. This program was presented by Ahren and Jeffrey Harris at two national conferences during the summer of 2005. He currently holds a degree in IT Specialized Technology.
