What Would You Do? - gunman safety
What would you do if an intruder with a gun appeared on campus? What if he entered your building? How would you react if he showed up in your classroom or office? Would you know what to do?
Many have scoffed at the notion that it could happen here at CMU. We're overly dramatic, we are told. But recent events at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic show that, indeed, it can happen here. And we need to be prepared BEFORE it happens.
EH&S has placed a highly acclaimed video on our website that tells you exactly what you should do to protect yourself in the event of an armed intruder on campus. This video is available to every student, staff member, and faculty member on campus, and we strongly encourage everyone to view it. It can be seen at https://ehs-apps.andrew.cmu.edu/secure/ALERT-Online/emergency-response/ShotsFiredVideo/ShotsFiredVideo.aspx.
In addition to the video, we also provide a link to an excellent brochure on the same subject, published by the Department of Homeland Security.
EH&S also offers training on how to protect yourself from a gunman, and we are willing to do a drill for your group or department in which you will actually interact with an intruder in a staged (and safe) encounter. Those who have participated in these drills have told us how invaluable they are, and that the drills made them more confident that they would know what to do if it ever happened here. To schedule a training class or drill, call us at 268-8182.
