Many laboratory groups also have machine shops, and they are used frequently by lab personnel. Following a fatal accident involving a Chemist at Yale last year, universities began looking more intently at safety in machine shops. Carnegie Mellon has created a Shop Safety Committee and most of the laboratory departments have representatives on the committee.
A recent accomplishment for the committee was the creation of a standard list of shop safety rules. If you use a machine shop, be on the lookout for this poster of these rules. They outline requirements for supervision in the shop, working alone in the shop, and many other important aspect of shop safety.
