Pyrophoric Storage and Use Policy

In June of 2010, a policy was implemented here are Carnegie Mellon to ensure the proper storage and use of pyrophoric materials.  These items can be the cause of extreme fire and serious physical harm.  As a result, building codes are very strict on the handling and use of the material and we are obligated to confirm to their rules.

Given the serious consequences of a problem with these materials (a fatality occurred not long ago in a research lab at UCLA) it is critical that owners of these material be in compliance with our policy.  If you have pyrophoric materials in your labs, please refresh your understanding of the policy by reviewing it in the following location:

The document addresses storage requirement, personal protective equipment needed for handling, personal contamination response, emergency procedures and waste disposal issues.  Please contact EH&S with any questions related to the policy.
