Flame-resistant Lab Coats
| Laboratories where pyrophoric materials are present and used must supply flame-resistant lab coats for users of these materials. You should remember the fatality at UCLA some years ago involving pyrophorics. Following that incident, Carnegie Mellon instituted a policy addressing the use of pyrophorics—use of a flame-resistant coat is a critical part of this. Mellon Stores (8-3212) has ordered a number of these coats and they are now available for purchase by the labs. The cost is minimal: $7!! (They are disposable.) If pyrophorics are in use in your lab, please purchase the appropriate protective coats as soon as possible. We will ask to see them when EH&S inspects the applicable laboratories. |
