Fire Alarm Testing-Environmental Health & Safety - Carnegie Mellon University

Fire Alarm Testing

In compliance with local, state, and national fire code requirements, Facilities Management Services conducts regular monthly tests of fire alarm systems throughout all university buildings according to a schedule prepared by Environmental Health & Safety.

The Fire Alarm Test Schedule is designed to provide the least amount of disruption as possible to academic studies and student life. These tests are usually conducted on the last full calendar week of each month, but may be moved to occur one or two weeks earlier if a university holiday falls in that same week.

For example, all testing in academic and administrative buildings is conducted between 5:30am and 8:00am; and in all student residence buildings no earlier than 9:00am, when most students are normally awake.

Evacuation is NOT required during scheduled fire alarm tests, but all Building occupants are cautioned to respond to sounding fire alarms at all other times by immediately evacuating their buildings.
