Recent Corporate Philanthropy
Carnegie Mellon has historically enjoyed mutually productive relationships with corporations. Below is a list of highlights of recent corporate gifts made to the university over the past six months.
GM gave $788,985 to support the GM Collaborative Research Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon, which produces innovative vehicle information technology. (April 2008)
DENSO gave $125,000 to support the research of Professor Takeo Kanade in the area of robotics and computer vision and systems. (April 2008)
Microsoft gave gifts totaling $160,000 to Jessica Hodgins, professor of computer science and robotics, and Kevin Pelphrey, associate professor of psychology, in support of their project "Exploring the Uncanny Valley," ($100,000) and computer science professor Lorrie Cranor ($60,000). (April 2008)
Bayer gave gifts totaling $131,252 to be designated as Bayer Fellowships in chemistry and chemical engineering. (April 2008)
IBM gave $83,300, a 2008 IBM Open Collaborative Faculty Award, to support the research of Professor Guy Blelloch (SCS). (April 2008)
Intel gave $130,000 to support the research of ECE professors Jose M.F. Moura ($75,000) and Adrian Perrig ($55,000). (April 2008)
Meaningful Machines gave $50,000, a graduate student fellowship, to support Chenmin Liang's research in Chinese-to-English machine translation at the Language Technologies Institute. (April 2008)
Accenture gave $50,000, a graduate student fellowship, to the Language Technologies Institute. (March 2008)
Emerson Process gave $125,000 to establish the Emerson Center at the School of Computer Science's Human-Computer Interaction Institute. (March 2008)
GM gave $70,000 to support College of Engineering undergraduate and graduate student initiatives. (March 2008)
Google gave $50,000 to support the research of Professor John Lafferty (SCS) in the area of dynamic topic models. The research is in collaboration with David Blei of Princeton. (March 2008)
Lassen Canyon Nursery gave $50,000 to support the research of Christopher Fromme at the Robotics Institute's National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC). (March 2008)
Bosch Corp. gave $75,000 to support Professor Raj Rajkumar's research in the area of modeling and simulating architectures of software intense systems, and $50,000 for student support and equipment to the Intelligent Workplace. (March 2008)
Microsoft gave $50,000 to support the research of Professor William Cohen in the area of using query logs to associate semantically related news stories. (February 2008)
Doris Duke Charitable Foundation gave $1.85 million to support Professor M. Granger Morgan's research in the area of geological sequestration of carbon dioxide. (February 2008)
Google gave $150,000 to support the research of Professor Alexei Efros and his project "What would we do with a gazillion images (and a gazillion CPUs?)," and Professor Noah Smith's research in the area of growing translation resources by modeling Wikipedia. (February 2008)
National Science Foundation selected Department of Mechanical Engineering Professor Jeremy J. Michalek as a recipient of the Faculty Early Career Development Award. The award comes with a $400,000 gift. (February 2008)
Henry L. Hillman Foundation gave $10 million to establish The Hillman Center for Future-Generation Technologies as part of the new School of Computer Science Complex. (February 2008)
NAVTEQ gave $65,000 to support the research of Professors Takeo Kanade and James Wang of the Robotics Institute. They are exploring the potential long-term benefits to mapping and navigation. (February 2008)
Electronic Arts pledged $150,000 to establish the Randy Pausch Electronic Arts Scholarship Fund, which will recognize students who have demonstrated excellence in courses related to videogame technology and computer science. (January 2008)
National Science Foundation gave $1.6 million to support Professor Jacobo Bielak's research in the area of computer simulations of earthquakes. (January 2008)
GM gave $245,000 to support Professor Jodi Forlizzi's work in navigation display format design optimization ($125,000) and Professor Jie Yang's work in a context aware navigation environment ($120,000). (January 2008)
IBM gave $80,000 toward the IBM-Carnegie Mellon Faculty Awards to Encourage Collaboration. (January 2008)
PDF gave $50,000 to support the CIT Dean's Innovation Fund and Dr. Pradeep Khosla. (December 2007)
Nokia gave $150,000 to support Professor Martin Griss's research of context-aware mobile computing at Carnegie Mellon West ($100,000), and Professors Norman Sadeh and Jason Hong work in the area of user controllable security and privacy ($50,000). (December 2007)
AT&T Labs gave $50,000 to support Computer Science Professor Srinivasan Seshan. (December 2007)
Motorola gave $50,000 to support the Summer Academy for Mathematics and Science (SAMS). (December 2007)
W.M. Keck Foundation gave $1.1 million to support the neuroscience research of Cognitive Neuroscience Professor Marcel Just and Computer Science Professor Tom M. Mitchell. (December 2007)
Sprint gave $52,000 to support the research of Professor Christos Faloutsos in the area of data mining for time series and network traffic data. (December 2007)
ExxonMobil gave $189,100 as part of the company's Departmental Grants Program and Educational Matching Gifts Program. (November 2007)
