Computing Services offers various web publishing tools for those who would like to establish web presence at the university whether it be for an official, personal, course-related, or student organizational site. The right web publishing tool for you depends on your needs and the type of content you plan to publish.
Depending on the your level of comfort with designing webpages and the site content being presented, there are two methods available for creating official Carnegie Mellon University sites:
- Official Carnegie Mellon University Sites using CMS
To achieve the look and feel of Carnegie Mellon University's official web presence, you may choose to create and publish your site through the Content Management System (CMS). The CMS separates content, or the information contained on a site, from presentational elements such as fonts, colors, styles, and page layout. Through the CMS you can easily manage your content without having to know about the design or the technical aspects of building a site from scratch. The CMS is available to all academic and administrative departments, research groups, centers, and labs provided that they have official recognition by the university.
- Official Carnegie Mellon University Sites using AWPS
The Andrew Web Publishing System (AWPS) is a self-service publishing method offered to those who would like to design and develop their own websites from scratch and need server space on the www.cmu.edu domain to host it. AWPS is available to all academic and administrative departments, research groups, centers, and labs provided that they have official recognition by the university.
Carnegie Mellon affiliates can publish personal or course pages on http://www.andrew.cmu.edu
Student Organization pages are maintained on The Bridge. To request web space for either a Student Government recognized organization or a departmentally recognized organization, please contact Student Activities at 412-268-8704.
