Software for New Users

Computing Services provides a number of software applications for students, faculty and staff members. Most software is free while other software requires a fee that you can pay at the the Computer Sales area of the University Store.

For new students, faculty and staff members, this page provides a short list of the software you need to get started with computing at Carnegie Mellon. Once you're up and running, you should review the complete list of software.

IMPORTANT! Some software applications must be installed before installing others. If you are installing software for the first time, perform the installations in the order listed below:

3. Malware (Windows only):Malwarebytes
4. Secure FTP Clients

• SSH Secure Shell (Windows)
• Fugu SFTP (Mac) or Fetch (Mac)

5. Secure Telnet Clients

• SSH Secure Shell (Windows)
• Terminal (available with Mac OS)

6. Email Clients

• Webmail

• Microsoft Outlook (Windows)
