Installing Symantec Antivirus

Follow the instructions appropriate for your operating system.

Windows XP and Vista

  1. IMPORTANT: Please determine which of the following applies to you and take the appropriate action:
    • If you have an older version of Symantec Antivirus (e.g., 8.x, 9.x), you should not uninstall it.
    • If you have anti-virus software other than Symantec AntiVirus (e.g., McAfee) installed on your machine, un-install it before installing Symantec Antivirus.
  2. Close all open applications.
  3. Double-click on the installer you downloaded to begin the installation.

    As you step through installation, choose "Client Install" and "Complete Setup" when asked.

    Setup supports managed and unmanaged installation scenarios. If there is someone in your department who is responsible for maintaining your computer, check with that person before installing. Otherwise, select Unmanaged when asked.

    For other options presented during installation, use the default values.

Mac OS X

  1. Double-click on the installer you downloaded to decompress the installation files.
  2. Open the folder and double-click on the Norton AntiVirus Installer file.
  3. Follow the instructions provided with the installer.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR LEOPARD USERS: Once you install Symantec, download and install LiveUpdate 4.0.4 from the Symantec web site.  This update is required for the latest virus definitions.
