Installing Symantec/Norton

Follow the appropriate instructions for your operating system.

Windows Vista and XP

Note: This version of Symantec Endpoint Protection is configured to run Live Update daily at noon. If you wish to change that time, see the Scheduling Live Updates section of the Symantec Endpoint Protection document.

  1. Determine which of the following applies to you and take the appropriate action:
    • If you have an older version of Symantec  (e.g., 8.x, 9.x), you should NOT uninstall it.
    • If you have anti-virus software other than Symantec  (e.g., McAfee, Norton 360, etc.) installed on your computer, you SHOULD UNINSTALL it before installing Symantec Endpoint Protection.  For help with uninstalling other antivirus software, refer to the software vendor site or to Step 4 of the Steps to Clean Your Windows Computer document.
  2. Close all open applications.
  3. Double-click on the installer you downloaded to begin the installation.
  4. As you step through the installation process, select Typical for the type of installation. For other options presented during the installation, accept the default response.
  5. Once the installation completes, the InstallShield Wizard Complete screen appears. Shortly after, Symantec will automatically launch LiveUpdate. This step assures that you have the latest virus definition files.
  6. Once LiveUpdate completes, click Finish.
