Installing Oracle Calendar Sync

(Mac computer with a PalmOS device)

Read the Cautionary Information, then follow the installation instructions.

Cautionary Information

All current versions of Oracle Calendar Sync experience problems when agendas are uploaded from the handheld device to the user's desktop machine. These problems can cause duplicate meetings to appear in the agenda after uploading them from the handheld device while others can cause repeating meetings to become a large number of non-repeating meetings.

For this reason, we advise you to only download your schedule to your mobile device. By following this practice, the worst that can happen is that your agenda will experience problems only on your handheld device. If you upload your agenda to Oracle Calendar on your desktop machine, your agenda will most likely have problems on the server as well, which means that you won't be able to recover the correct version of your agenda.

Installation Instructions

Follow these steps to install Oracle Calendar Sync on a Windows computer with a PalmOS device.

  1. Be sure you've installed the Palm Desktop software version 4.0 or later and used it at least once to sync your Palm handheld. The Palm HotSync Manager is required but the Palm Desktop application can be skipped if you prefer to not install it. You can find downloads for the appropriate programs at http://www.palm.com/.
  2. Be sure that the latest version of Kerberos for Macintosh is installed on your desktop computer. The Oracle Calendar Sync software needs it in order to use Kerberos authentication.
  3. Download the Oracle Calendar Sync installer from the My Andrew web service.
  4. Once you've downloaded it, run the Oracle Calendar Sync installer. Note: At the beginning of the installation process you will be prompted to enter an administrator password. Note: When you first sync a Palm device, you may be required to assign the unit a name. Since each device has a different name, multiple devices can be synced to one desktop.
  5. Select the Custom Install option.
  6. Select which conduits are appropriate to install based on your usage of the Palm Desktop software. Choices are as follows:
    • Oracle Calendar Sync (ALWAYS required)
    • Conduit for Events (events/meetings, daily notes and day events)
    • Conduit for Tasks ("to do" list items)
    • Conduit for Addresses (do NOT install this conduit)
  7. Click Install. Once the installer has completed, click Quit.
  8. Sync your Palm device (i.e., place the Palm device in the cradle) to download the new setup utility to it.
  9. Once the synchronization process completes, locate the Oracle Calendar Sync application on your palm device and click on it. 10. Complete the following information:
    • User: Leave blank
    • Password: Leave blank (remove any text that's in this field)
    • Connect: To server
    • Server: calendar.andrew.cmu.edu.

Note: The calendar server field is not wide enough to display the entire server name. To ensure that the server name is entered accurately, enter cmu.edu in the Calendar server field, then arrow left to the beginning of the field and enter calendar.andrew.
    • Node ID: Leave blank
  10. In addition to the options listed in step 10, you can also configure the following if you choose:
    • Dates: Enter the date range to HotSync events and tasks within that range

      Note:
Anything outside of this date range will be erased from your palm device
    • Events: Allows you to "HotSync refused entries" and "Show Attendees"
    • Tasks: Allows you to "HotSync Completed Tasks"
    • Addresses
  11. HotSync your palm device again. This will download your calendar to your palm device.
