Virtual Private Networking

Virtual Private Network (VPN) creates a secure connection, called a tunnel, between your computer and the server. This tunnel allows secure communications and the ability to extend local campus network access to off-site locations. Cisco AnyConnect VPN is the VPN client available for connecting to Carnegie Mellon resources. You will need a VPN connection for:

  • off-site access to an IP restricted service
  • applications that do not provide secure transfer of data from off campus
  • secure transfer of information when using wireless
  • access to a service on a restricted subnet

Optional Features and Apps

  • General Use Campus VPN (vpn.cmu.edu) - access services that are restricted to a campus connection (e.g., Windows file shares, Andrew printing)
  • Library VPN (library-vpn.cmu.edu) - access restricted library resources

Eligibility

  • Students, faculty and staff
