Computer Repair
Computing Services' Computer Maintenance Group (CMG) provides repair services for computer products to all Carnegie Mellon University students, faculty and staff. Services provided by CMG offer advantages over off-campus commercial services including:
- Convenience: Repairs are completed on equipment as it is received. The current wait time is posted at the front counter. Both drop-off and on-site services are available.
- Expertise: Our own factory authorized technicians can provide warranty service on brands such as Apple, Dell, IBM and HP.

Service subscriptions for many brands of computer equipment; prices vary according to brand names. In most cases contract rates are lower than the manufacturer's suggested retail rate. We can also customize a service plan to fit your particular mix of equipment and service needs. Examples of current offerings include:
- AppleCare® for most Apple products.
- HP On-Site Warranty® for some Hewlett Packard equipment.
- Equipment Return/Shipment
When equipment needs to be returned to the manufacturer for repair, we can arrange for the shipment of your unit whether it is in warranty or out-of-warranty.
- Diagnostics
We offer services to ensure peak performance and help you detect the cause of any problems you are having with your equipment.
- Troubleshooting
We can determine whether a problem with your equipment is hardware or software related by using various diagnostic tools.
- Upgrades
We offer several different types of upgrades including the installation of memory, internal drives, and other products.
- Data Back-Up and Recovery
We can attempt to back up a damaged hard drive onto other media or we can direct you to the companies that specialize in that type of service. Prices vary according to the size of the hard drive. Estimates are available.
- Custom Services

- Manufacturer training for technical personnel
- Parts insurance programs
