Summary of Services

Computer Support
DSP Supports desktop and laptop computers, (PCs and Macs) owned by Carnegie Mellon University.

  • We install new computers and configure them on our campus network
  • We reload the operating system and configure the computer network settings in the case of software corruption or problems related to hardware failure
  • We provide technical support such as analysis, software/hardware troubleshooting, security analysis, and software repair
  • We maintain and update the security for operating systems and applicable software as necessary and available
  • We configure your computer and install software for reasonable protection from viruses and spy-ware
  • We remove viruses and spy-ware from your computers as necessary
  • We escalate computer support issues to the vendor if needed
Collaboration
DSP will coordinate efforts with other groups within Computing Services such as:
  • Computer Education and Outreach (Training)   
  • Computer Maintenance Group (Hardware Repairs)   
  • Computer Store Purchases (Equipment Purchases)
  • Help Center/Accounts (Various Support and Account Issues)
  • Network/Data Communications (Network/Data Support, Port Activations)
  • Infrastructure Group (Windows, Mac, Web, Unix, and Email)
  • Production Services (Backup and Restore)
  • Media Technology (Conference Room Setup)
  • Administrative Computing (Financials, Student Systems, Advancement, Human Resources)
  • Information Security Office (Computing Security and Policies)

Strategic Technical Management
DSP will work with your department in order to develop a strategic plan for your computing environment. The Strategic Plan includes, but is not limited to:   

  • Computer replacement or upgrade   
  • Software and hardware inventory and tracking
  • Systems development project management according to a defined system development life cycle   
  • Evaluation of new products and services

Peripherals

  • We configure printers and the ability to print from computers including HP Jet Direct Cards.  DSP will provide best-effort printer support for non-HP printers   
  • We support combination copier/fax/printers' ability to print from your computers (configuration is the responsibility of the vendor)   
  • We can install and support the basic functionality of external microphones, web cams, USB extenders, scanners, external hard drives (USB, Firewire), and external CD/RW's   
  • We support the installation of digital camera software and USB setup of cameras
Software Support
Software support includes installation, basic configuration, operability troubleshooting, and basic functionality.
  • Computer Operating Systems: Mac OS X; Windows XP Pro
  • Productivity Software: Microsoft Office XP/2003; FileMaker Pro
  • Email Clients: Outlook XP/2003; CMU WebMail
  • Web Browsers: MS Internet Explorer; Netscape Navigator; FireFox; Mozilla
  • Mobile Devices: Windows Mobile, Palm OS (Best Effort Only)
  • My Andrew Software: DSP will provide first level support for all software that is listed on the My Andrew website and offered by Computing Services
  • Administrative Computing Software: DSP will provide first level support for all the software products distributed by Administrative Computing. DSP will also coordinate with Administrative Computing any projects related to software releases.
  • VPN Software: DSP will support the Cisco VPN and any VPN solution available publicly from Computing Services.
