Communications Cabling-Computing Services - Carnegie Mellon University

Communications Cabling

The Computing Services Communications Cable Plant Office coordinates all aspects related to the installation and maintenance of communications cabling and outlets (voice, video and data) for the entire campus. This includes management of:
  • Category 6 UTP systems
  • Coaxial cabling systems
  • Multimode and Single-mode fiber optic systems
  • All related pathway (riser and horizontal for both intra-building and inter-building)
Through coordination with the Communications Cable Plant Office, these cabling systems are activated by Telecom to provide voice (phone) and CableTV services, and by Network Operations to provide data services (computer networking).

Previously, phone and data services were best provided by using separate jacks for each service.  It was recently determined that a “universal” communications outlet can be installed for either service. During an installation phase, if it is likely that separate jacks will be needed in the future on the same faceplate, it is recommended to use that opportunity to have them installed at that time to reduce costs and minimize disruption.

Installation and/or relocation of communications outlets are requested by submitting an installation request form.  If an estimate is needed prior to an installation, it can be requested by submitting an estimate request form.  For repair of communications cabling and jacks, please complete the repair request form.
