Application Virtualization Project
Computing Services and the Financial Systems Team (FST) have worked closely to develop a new platform for hosting virtualized applications (see the Project Discovery for details). Specifically, Microsoft (AppV) and Citrix (XenApp) technologies are being used to host applications in a virtualized environment where it is possible to deliver applications from a centralized, secure location (myapps.andrew.cmu.edu) to computers and mobile devices.
DecisionCast is the first application published to MyApps. It continues to have the same look and feel as the native DecisionCast application. However, DecisionCast hosted on a virtualized platform has these added benefits:
- Easy access to your applications through myapps.andrew.cmu.edu.
- A consistent look and feel across different operating systems and mobile devices.
- Improved performance on slow internet connections and older hardware.
- No VPN connection required for wireless OR off-campus connections.
- No installation of the application on your computer.
- Automatic application updates.
- Enhanced security and management for application administrators. Application updates are not dependent on operating system, browser and other software (e.g., MS Office, Oracle Java, Adobe Flash, etc.) versions.
- Automatic access to your MyFiles space. Additionally, for DSP customers, remote access to your MyDeptFiles space upon request.
DecisionCast delivered through MyApps will be rolled out to the rest of campus by early 2012. Computing Services will give departmental administrators the opportunity to test the system before it is rolled out to your department. We will also provide information on deploying Citrix Receiver and support training.
