Exchange Email and Calendar Services

Informational Update: Extended plan for email and calendar

In January, Computing Services shared background and extended implementation plans regarding the introduction of Microsoft Exchange email and calendar for faculty, staff and graduate students at the Pittsburgh campus. This is a status update for information purposes. No immediate action is required at this time.

Status of Extended Plan

Early Adopter Program – Phase 1
January - April 2011
Two groups within Computing Services have transitioned to the Exchange service.  Although Oracle Calendar continues as the calendar of record for the division, these groups are testing the Exchange calendar functionality.  This exercise has been an invaluable resource for understanding real work scenarios and issues related to individual machine configurations.  It was a successful and worthwhile step in improving the service for the greater university community.  The lessons learned during this Early Adopter program were incorporated into the Exchange transition plan to continuously improve the process for future departments.

Early Adopter Program – Phase 2
April - July 2011
We are pleased to announce that Finance and University Advancement (UA) have agreed to partner with Computing Services to be the first campus departments to transition to the Exchange service.  These transitions are part of the second phase of the Early Adopter initiative.  These departments are working closely with representatives from Computing Services to implement the improved Exchange transition plan.  This plan includes overview training and a guided transition for Exchange email and calendar.  UA is migrating to Exchange email in mid-May with a move to Exchange calendar in July.  Finance successfully migrated to Exchange email in April and May and is tentatively scheduled to move to Exchange calendar later this summer.

Evaluation and Planning for Campus Deployment
Summer - Fall 2011
As mentioned in our initial communication, the Exchange team will evaluate and plan a campus deployment based on information gathered from our experience throughout the Early Adopter program.  At that time, we will communicate plans for engaging with interested departments and individuals.

If you have any questions or concerns, please direct them to the Computing Services Help Center (412-268-HELP or advisor@andrew.cmu.edu) and they will be routed to the appropriate project team member.
