How:
Welcome back from the Information Security Office (ISO)!
The ISO encourages you to start the semester off right! Review the safe computing practices and perform any computer security maintenance that you may have deferred.
What You Need To Do:
If you suspect your computer has already been compromised, STOP! Read and follow Responding to a Compromised Computer.
If your computer is managed by a Carnegie Mellon departmental computing administrator, please consult that person before making any system changes.
If your computer is NOT managed by a Carnegie Mellon departmental computing administrator, follow the detailed steps below:
NOTE: You must login with an administrative account/password to complete steps marked with ***.
- Follow our Secure Your Computer guides to ensure your anti-virus and software patches are up to date to avoid the latest viruses, worms, software bugs, and exploits.***
See Secure Your Computer.
- Consider changing your passwords and avoid using the same password in multiple places. This is especially important if you do not have strong passwords or have not changed them in over a year.
See Managing Your Andrew Account Password.
- Review the following tips, procedures and guidelines.
- Backup your data periodically and secure your backup media in a safe place. Recovering from a system crash or a security compromise can be expedited if you maintain proper backups. Otherwise, you may be without your system for days or weeks and recreating lost work can be extremely difficult.
