Getting News
Computing Services publishes news and announcements through a variety of outlets so that YOU can CHOOSE the way you want to get your news. In addition to selecting the News link on our web site, you can choose to use the following resources:
- Computing Services News Web Page
News articles are published on our news web page. Categories are general computing news, outage news and security news.
- Mailing lists
Full announcements are distributed through our mailing lists. Follow steps provided here to learn how to subscribe and have the full announcement delivered directly to your Inbox!
- The Carnegie Mellon Web Portal
Headlines are published on our headline portlet within the Carnegie Mellon portal. Follow steps provided below to learn how to subscribe.
- RSS Feeds
Use RSS feeds to get the latest general, outage or security news headlines. RSS can be added easily added to your favorite reader (e.g., iGoogle, My Yahoo). For more information see our What is RSS? page.
News and notifications are also distributed on an as needed basis via the printed Cursor publication and through the NetNotify system.
Mailing Lists
You can subscribe to the following mailing lists. By subscribing, you'll receive the latest computing news right in your Inbox. Follow these steps to subscribe:
- Select the link(s) below for the mailing list(s) to which you'd like to subscribe. The appropriate Andrew Mailman mailing list subscription page will be displayed in a new window.
- compserv-security - subscribe to this mailing list to be notified of the latest security threats, such as viruses and operating system vulnerabilities. We also send notices to this list when major security updates are available for popular software and operating systems. See the Information Security Office (ISO) Web Site for general information about secure computing.
- dept-computing-group - this list offers technical information that is geared to campus departmental administrators. Note that the news offered here may be too technical for the average person.
- Scroll down and click the Log in via WebISO button (right side of page) to sign in and have the page automatically complete your email address.
The Carnegie Mellon Web Portal
Follow the steps below to add the Computing Services headlines portlet to one of your portal tabs.
- Launch a web browser and visit the Carnegie Mellon Web Portal.
- Click on the tab to which you want to add a portlet. For example, if you want to add a portlet to the Home tab, click on the Home tab.
- When the tab is active (at the forefront) an Edit button appears on the tab. Click Edit.
- Click Add Portlets.
- Click Campus Services and then click Computing Services. Select the checkbox next to Computing Services News.
- At the bottom of the screen display, click Add Selected.
