Prep for Fall 2013

Students and Faculty Members,

As the semester concludes and you leave campus, consider the following before returning in the fall:

Upgrade Your Operating System

If your computer is running Windows XP, Windows Vista or Mac OS X 10.6, upgrade it over the summer. Computing Services is discontinuing support of these operating systems:

Mac OS X 10.6- July 31, 2013

  • Administrative Departments with Apple Maintenance (Faculty and Staff) may acquire Mac OS X 10.8 through the Computing Services site license. Visit the Mac OS X page for licensing information. If your department would like to subscribe, please send email to
  • Individuals who are not covered by the campus site license can purchase Mac OS X 10.8 through the Apple Store (
  • DSP customers should contact their DSP consultant ( or 412-268-6959).

Windows XP & Vista- December 31, 2013

  • Administrative Departments and Students may purchase Windows 8 through Computer Sales. You can also download Windows 7 or 8 through the DreamSpark program.
  • DSP customers should contact their DSP consultant ( or 412-268-6959).

Plan to Transition Your Andrew Calendar Account

If your department hasn’t done so already, consider moving to Exchange email and calendar. Computing Services will retire Andrew Calendar in December. To schedule a transition to Exchange or for more information, please visit the Exchange Email and Calendar page.

Pittsburgh undergraduate students will transition to Google for email and calendar on September 2. We expect the transition to be seamless; however, you will need to re-configure any mobile devices. Look for details to be sent over the summer to your Andrew email address or visit the Google Apps page.

Please contact the Computing Services Help Center ( or 412-268-4357) with any questions or comments.
