REMINDER: Web Portal Upgrade Pre-Release

The Computing Services Web Group has been working on a major upgrade to the Carnegie Mellon Web Portal (https://my.cmu.edu). This upgrade provides the campus community with an updated portal design, improved performance, and increased hardware reliability.  In addition, upgraded development tools will allow increased functionality for future portal enhancements. The Carnegie Mellon Web Portal at https://my.cmu.edu will be replaced with the new design effective May 29, 2009.

The new portal design limits the customization of the portlet arrangement to the right-most column of the Home page.  This is a deliberate limitation that will allow us to better target content to specific groups of users (e.g., all students) within the left column of the page.  The ability to target this content was not possible with the old configuration of the portal. In addition, an area called "My Pages" allows you to choose any set of portlets.

Unfortunately, we cannot import your existing portlet subscriptions into the new web portal interface.  To give our existing portal users time to recreate subscriptions, we are pre-releasing the new web portal at https://portalfe-01.andrew.cmu.edu/portal/site/main/.

ACTION:
- If you have not customized your existing portlet subscriptions and arrangement, no action is necessary. The new portal will provide you with a functioning default layout.
- If you would like to maintain your existing portlet subscriptions in the new portal, please do so before May 29, 2009.
Note: Your old portal configuration will be available to view until July 15, 2009 but the location will change effective May 29th (this web address will be provided in a future communication).

Follow the steps detailed below to modify your portal subscriptions.
1.    Launch a web browser and open the existing web portal interface https://my.cmu.edu and the new web portal https://portalfe-01.andrew.cmu.edu/portal/site/main/ in separate windows.  
2.    From the new web portal, click the "Add Portlet" link at the top right corner of the Home page to model your portlet subscriptions after those within the existing web portal.

NOTE: The new portal interface may not contain some of the features (e.g., all RSS feeds) that were previously available. If you find that you are missing a feature that is important to you, please contact the Help Center (x8-HELP or advisor@andrew.cmu.edu). For other questions or comments, contact your departmental administrator or DSP consultant.

We apologize for any inconvenience this changeover may cause, but hope that you enjoy the new portal design.
