Your Andrew Account and Password
Your Andrew Account is your key to access many of the university's computing services such as the Carnegie Mellon Web Portal, computing clusters, e-mail, and other services.
Your Andrew Account
Once your Andrew Account is assigned, you can learn what your account AND your e-mail address are by visiting the Carnegie Mellon directory web page. The directory page displays your e-mail address. To determine your Andrew ID, follow this example:
- If e-mail address = jsmith@andrew.cmu.edu
- Andrew Account ID / Name = jsmith
Note: To learn more about Andrew Accounts, refer to the Accounts web page.
Selecting a Password
To protect your Andrew account, you should change your password to something personal and secure as soon as possible. For help with selecting a secure password, refer to
Managing Your Andrew Password document.
Your Andrew Password
Depending on your affiliation, refer to the appropriate section below to determine/set your password:
New Undergraduate Students
Follow ONE of the processes below:
- If you reside in the continental United States and have NOT previously held an Andrew account (e.g., you were never a Pre-college, PA Governor or SAMS student), visit the web page at https://webiso.andrew.cmu.edu/passr/initialsetup.cgi and follow the on-screen instructions. To access the site, you'll need to know the Admission ID that you used through the enrollment process.
- If you are an International Undergraduate student OR if you previously held an Andrew Account, visit the Password change page. On that page, enter your Andrew UserID. In the Current Password field, enter the first 8-digits of your Student Identification number. This number can be found on the bottom of the Enrollment Receipt letter that you received after submitting your deposit money and Enrollment Reply form. Once you've successfully changed your password, visit the Password Reset page to configure your security questions.
- Cross-registered students are students who are enrolled full or part-time at other institutions but are taking some classes at Carnegie Mellon. Visit the Password change page. On that page, enter your Andrew UserID. In the Current Password field, enter the first 8-digits of your Student ID number. This number can be found on the student account invoice that you received from Enrollment Services. Once you've successfully changed your password, visit the Password Reset page to configure your security questions.
Graduate Students

This number can be found on the student account invoice that you received from Enrollment Services. Once you've successfully changed your password, visit the Password Reset page to configure your security questions.
Special Groups (Pre-College, PA Governor School, SAMS students)

This number can be found on the student account invoice that you received from Enrollment Services. Once you've successfully changed your password, visit the Password Reset page to configure your security questions.
Faculty or Staff

If you don't already know your University ID number, check with your supervisor or your department, business, or Human Resource Employee Module (HREM) administrator. Note that your account and password will NOT be established until you have completed all necessary paper work (e.g., tax forms, etc.) with Human Resources. Once you've successfully changed your password, visit the Password Reset page to configure your security questions.
Sponsored Accounts (Guests)
The password is arbitrary, but typically chosen by the Sponsored Account holder. If you don't know your password, check with your Business Administrator or the Help Center. To change your password to something personal and secure, visit the Password change page.
What if I forget my password?
If you change your password, and then forget it, you will need to bring your ID card to the Help Center in Cyert Hall and have your password reset. Passwords will NOT be reset without positive identification.
To avoid this situation, be sure to use the Password Reset page to configure your security questions. For more details on this service, read the Forgot your password? section of the Managing Your Andrew Password document.
