Academic or Administrative Buildings

Complete the following steps to establish a wired Ethernet connection in your Academic or Administrative office.

Step 1: Get the Hardware You Need

In order to establish a wired Ethernet connection, you'll need an Ethernet card and Ethernet cable. You'll connect the Ethernet card in your computer to the data outlet (or Ethernet outlet) in your office via the Ethernet cable.

If your office does NOT already have a data outlet installed; OR, if you need to have the existing data outlet relocated within your office:

Step 2: Activate Your Data Outlet

Because departments in academic or administrative buildings pay a fee for outlet activation, the data outlet in your building may not be pre-activated.  Check with your DSP consultant or Department Administrator to determine if your outlet is pre-activated.  If the outlet is NOT activated, contact the Computer Sales area of the University Store for fee information and to activate the data outlet.

Step 3: Register and Configure Your Computer

Once your data outlet is activated, you must register your computer in the Carnegie Mellon Network Registration System (Netreg).  “Netreg” allows anyone with a valid Andrew ID who is using a wired Ethernet card to easily register their computer on the campus wired network. To access Netreg, launch a web browser and visit the FirstConnect site.  FirstConnect will walk you through the steps necessary to register and configure your computer. Once you've finished the registration process, allow 30 minutes for the registration to take effect.
