Step 2: Connect

Follow the appropriate steps (Windows or Mac) below to use the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client.

IMPORTANT: Connect to AnyConnect BEFORE you start the application that requires the use of VPN.

Windows

  1. If you are off-campus, connect to the Internet as you normally would (i.e., DSL, cable modem).  On-campus, continue to step 2.
  2. Open the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client:
    • Windows 7: Applications > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client
    • Windows 8: All Apps > Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client
  3. In the empty field type vpn.cmu.edu and then click Connect.
  4. A new dialog box appears.  Select General Use Campus VPN or Library Resources VPN from the Group drop down menu and enter your Andrew userID and password.  Click OK. (See the "Which group connection type should I use?" section below for help.)

  5. You are now connected via VPN.
  6. To end your session, click Disconnect in the application window.

Mac

  1. If you are off-campus, connect to the Internet as you normally would (i.e., DSL, cable modem). On-campus, continue to step 2.
  2. Launch Applications > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.
  3. In the field below Ready to connect type vpn.cmu.edu and then click Connect.

  4. A new dialog box appears.  Select General Use Campus VPN or Library Resources VPN from the Group drop down menu and enter your Andrew userID and password.  Click OK.  (See the "Which group connection type should I use?" section below for help.)

  5. You are now connected via VPN.
  6. To disconnect your VPN session, select the Cisco AnyConnect client application from the dock to bring it to the foreground and click Disconnect.

Use the table below to determine which group connection type to choose.

If you need to access: Select:
Library licensed resources
(ArtSTOR, NetLibrary ebooks, and AP Photo Archive)
Library Resources VPN*
Windows file shares General Use Campus VPN
ACIS services (SIS, DecisionCast, HRIS) General Use Campus VPN

*Library Resources VPN: When you are connected using the VPN-Library network ALL of your Internet traffic is tunneled through the VPN connection. This may reduce performance.
