Computing Off Campus
While working off campus, you may need to access software, files or other services.
Andrew File System
Andrew File System (AFS) is a secure place to share and store your files. Once you connect to the Internet, you can transfer files to and from your AFS home directory using a file transfer program such as SSH Secure File Transfer (Windows), Fugu SFTP (Mac) or Fetch (Mac). Download these applications from our software page.
Note: Place files that you want others using AFS to access in the public subdirectory of your home directory.
Virtual Private Networking
When computing off campus, Virtual Private Networking (VPN) is a valuable tool for accessing services and resources that are otherwise restricted to on-campus connections.
Virtual Andrew
Virtual Andrew provides remote access to a variety of academic software from a Windows, Mac or Linux computer. Visit the Virtual Andrew page for more information.
Email
A convenient way to read your email off-campus is through Andrew Webmail. To connect to Andrew Webmail:
- Go to webmail.andrew.cmu.edu.
- When prompted, enter your Andrew account userID and password.
You can also read your email on your mobile device or a supported email client. For steps, please see the appropriate configuration steps below.
To manage your email, Computing Services offers a number of tools. For information on mail forwarding, using an @cmu.edu address or managing your quota, see the "Managing Email" section of the Email and Calendar web page.
