Connect Network-Enabled Devices

Follow the steps below to connect a network-enabled device (e.g., Xbox, PS3, Wii, Nintendo DS, Printer, etc.) to the wireless or wired network.

Wireless

  1. Locate CMU in your wireless network list and select it. CMU is available across campus.
  2. Launch your device's web browser.
  3. Go to the FirstConnect web site at www.cmu.edu/computing/firstconnect/ and then select Quick Registration.
  4. Click Wireless and complete the form. Once registered, the CMU wireless network will be available without restriction.

Wired

  1. Request to have your data outlet activated at activations.net.cmu.edu. IMPORTANT: Outlet activation may take up to two business days.
Academic and Administrative Buildings - Register your outlet at netreg.net.cmu.edu.
  2. Connect your Ethernet cable to the Ethernet card on your device; on the other end connect the Ethernet cable to the pass-through which plugs into the data outlet in the room. See the Residence Hall Connection Types page to determine if you need a pass-through.  If your room does not require a pass-through, connect the Ethernet cable directly into the data outlet. See image.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • If your device has a web browser - Go to the FirstConnect web site www.cmu.edu/computing/firstconnect/ and then select Quick Registration. Click Wired and complete the form.
    • If your device does not have a web browser - From a computer, go to the NetReg site netreg.net.cmu.edu/ and then click Register New Machine. Enter the required information for your device. For detailed steps steps, see the Network Registration document.

Allow 30 minutes for the registration to take effect.
  4. Configure your device to connect to the wired network. For help, consult your device manual. If your device requires manual configuration, see the machine configuration information available from NetReg. In NetReg, click the device hostname and then click View Network Configuration Information.

    Example Configuration Information
    Hostname: USER.RES.CMU.EDU
    Subnet: CYH
    IP Address: 128.0.000.000
    Network Mask: 255.000.000.0
    Gateway Router: 128.0.000.0
    Broadcast Address: 128.0.000.000

Go ahead...connect your mobile device. But, don't:

  • Use your smart phone as a wireless hotspot.
  • Create an ad-hoc wireless network.
  • Download software, music and movies illegally
