Bandwidth Usage and Enforcement
Computing Services has developed guidelines to ensure fair use of Carnegie Mellon's network access to the Internet. Since the university's connection to the Internet is a limited resource that is available to anyone who has a machine connected to the network, exceptionally high use of this resource has an impact on all other users.
How to Determine Your Bandwidth Usage
To adequately enforce our bandwidth usage guidelines, Computing Services continually monitors traffic to the commodity Internet link and records the usage for each machine registered on the network. Campus affiliates can determine their bandwidth usage by accessing the Bandwidth Usage Monitoring System.
Requesting Additional Bandwidth
Campus affiliates who believe that they have a legitimate need for additional bandwidth should complete the Bandwidth Exemption Request form. Note that completing this form does not guarantee that additional bandwidth will be granted. The form simply affords Computing Services the ability to fairly evaluate your situation.
