Email Clients
No matter what you do at Carnegie Mellon, you will probably become dependent on e-mail. Carnegie Mellon uses Cyrus electronic mail. Cyrus is based on standard Internet protocols. The protocols used are Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP4), Post Office Protocol (POP3), and Multi-purpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) for enclosures.
Mail clients are the applications you use to read or send your mail messages. Cyrus allows you to use any e-mail client that is compatible with either POP3 or IMAP protocols. With the different e-mail clients available to you, which one(s) should you use? Read the information below to determine the best client for you:

Non-supported Mail Clients
The following is a list of some non-supported e-mail clients. Our testing has revealed specific problems with each of these clients. In addition to the problems listed, all of these clients are very slow when finding and reading bboards at Carnegie Mellon.
Eudora and Netscape 6
Platform: Windows, Mac
Issues with handling large numbers of bboards.
Apple Mail
Platform: Mac To enable secure server connections, you MUST use the version included with 10.1.3 or LATER.

Mozilla
Platform: Windows and Mac
Netscape 4.x
Platform: Windows / Mac OS 7.x - 9.x
Netscape 4 generates a "No User Certificate" error each time you send a secure mail message--an annoying, but harmless error message.
Outlook 2000
Platform: Windows
All versions of Outlook prior to Outlook 2002 have minimal built-in security. These earlier versions are commonly used to propagate harmful messages by misrepresenting an attachment, auto-running scripts, and allowing the address book to relay the virus laden e-mail.
Outlook Express
Platform: Windows and Mac
We strongly discourage the use of Outlook on PC platforms. It offers no built-in security / antivirus functionality. Because of the method it uses to auto-run certain embedded html scripts, it is commonly used to propagate viruses.
Thunderbird
Platform: Windows and Mac
