Classroom Media IP discovery project Presenter: Gregg Mathis Instructional Technology (IT) has been watching the progress of data projector manufacturers in their efforts to incorporate ethernet hardware and firmware as an integral components of their products. IT senses a paradigm shift in the control marketplace in which both significant items (data projectors, net cameras) and less significant items (electric screens, amplifiers) are being introduced. Planning for the integration and adoption of these technologies is much preferred to dealing with them in a less orderly manner. The Instructional Technology group in Computing Services will identify a framework in which to consider audio visual, networking, and user interface issues for networked devices of classrooms. The expected outcome of Discovery will be the recommendation to implement a fall 03 pilot of networked devices in one classroom. The project team will query their peer institutions on use of such devices and research the appliances and protocols. The resulting data will be compared against the Carnegie Mellon networking environment. A recommendation will be made on whether to proceed with a pilot and if so, the specific equipment and location to be chosen. Should this recommendation be accepted by the Discovery Board, IT would proceed to implement the pilot as a Delivery project in late summer/early fall.
