Logging Into & Out of AFS

For information related to this topic refer to:

Login Procedures

To log into the AFS distributed file system, you must have an Andrew user ID and a password. If you do not have a user ID or password, or if you need help with your user ID and password, contact your department administrator or the Help Center at 412-268-HELP.

The login prompt

The login: prompt typically appears after the name of the workstation. For example, if you are working at a workstation named watson, the login prompt would look something like this:

watson.bh.andrew.cmu.edu login:

If the login: prompt does not currently appear on your workstation screen, press the Return key to make it appear.

How to log in

  1. At the login: prompt, type your user ID (all lower case) and press Return. If you make a mistake, use the Backspace to correct it; retype and press Return.
  2. At the password: prompt, type your password and press Return.

Note: To determine your password, see Managing Your Andrew Account and Password.

All new user accounts are created to startup X11 and mwm (the Motif Window Manager) automatically whenever the user logs in.

Logout Procedures

This section describes how to log out of Andrew when you are running X11/mwm (the X11 Window System with Motif Window Manager).

Logging out of X11/mwm

Follow these steps to log out:

  1. If you are running X11/mwm, the Logout/Quit option is available on your All Windows menu. To access this option, move the mouse cursor into the root window (the black background behind all the other windows) and press the left mouse button.
  2. Select Exit fvwm2 from the menu.
  3. The prompt "Really Quit?" appears. Select Yes.

Note: If you have not set the NO_LOGOUT_ON_QUIT environment variable from within your .login file, you will automatically be logged out of the system. All of your windows will disappear and the login prompt will appear on the screen so that the next user can log in.

This variable lets you quit the window manager without quitting Andrew; instead, you are taken back to the system prompt.

Note: The NO_LOGOUT_ON_QUIT variable will only have an affect if your windowing environment has been started with the global.startwindows mechanism. See the conversion help file for further information on global.startwindows.

By default, this environment variable is not set, so when you log out of the window manager, you completely log out of the AFS distributed file system.

If you have set the NO_LOGOUT_ON_QUIT environment variable (see the following section), choosing the Logout/Quit option will quit the window manager and place you back at the system prompt, %. In order to log out of the system, you will have to type logout at this prompt and press Return.

Setting the NO_LOGOUT_ON_QUIT variable

  1. To set the NO_LOGOUT_ON_QUIT environment variable in your .login file, type the following at the system prompt (from your home directory) and press Return:
    ez .login
  2. Once you have opened your .login file, type the following on a line by itself (there is no # sign preceding the line):
setenv NO_LOGOUT_ON_QUIT

If you have problems logging out

If you cannot log out of an Andrew workstation, talk to the consultant if you are working in a staffed cluster, or call the Help Center, x8-4357.
